Southwestern Illinois College’s Phlebotomy program is designed to prepare students for a career as a skilled phlebotomist. This program offers a focused curriculum designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and hands-on experience required for success in the field. Enrollment in MLT 100, the core phlebotomy course, is based on a first-come, first-served system, emphasizing the importance of early registration. The program emphasizes the need for students to meet specific health and auto insurance requirements which may be requested by the clinical sites, along with malpractice insurance which is provided by the college through lab fees. Students are also encouraged to have current immunizations, a negative tuberculosis test, a COVID vaccination and a flu shot to meet potential clinical site demands. The program requires a background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing, to ensure patient safety and compliance with healthcare regulations. Upon completion, graduates will be well-prepared to seek employment as phlebotomists in various healthcare settings.
